At 23, I`ve decided to take a bit of a leap. Or hiatus, one might say. I spent four years at the U. Toronto for Urban Studies, Environmental Science and English… which I thoroughly enjoyed. I graduated in the spring, and have now found myself in a kind of limbo.
The most obvious choice was of course grad school… I loved writing my undergrad thesis on condo development and displacement in downtown Toronto, and look forward to analyzing other great cities. Alternatively, I could have taken advantage of the connections I`d made in my mini-internship with the Provincial Planning department, and became a real live urban planner, working just south of Queens Park. But it wasn`t for me.
Like so many of my inspiring and academically brilliant friends with nondescript undergraduate degrees, I felt I needed, or deserved, something more before committing to a `real` job or graduate school. Some may call us the indulgent generation, which could be true. But more accurately, our value system has simply evolved from that of our parents. We have grown to incorporate the modern ideals that we need to live effectively and responsibly in this ever-changing world; and we`ve learned to grasp at every opportunity we`ve been fortunately granted within it.
That said, like so many of my peers, I`ve repeatedly worked hard to find the time and money to travel the world on long-haul, `authentic` backpacking trips. I`ve worked, studied, lived in, and explored as much of the world as has been possible up to this point, and I hope I will continue to do so for the rest of my life!
Perspective is key and there is no greater catalyst for this than travel. I so firmly believe that the experiences we have as intelligent post-grads, lost and engulfed within some sort of quarterlife crisis, will more than positively affect our actions in any future careers and social relationships we find ourselves in.
This blog is to sum up my thoughts, passions, observations and experiences at this most vibrant time in my life. Hope you enjoy
